Celebrating International Women's Day 2025
Every year to celebrate International Women's Day I have been sharing the work of female artists that inspire me through my social media.
But, this time I decided to create a blog post about it and start a little tradition.
This year I will highlight women whose work is inspired by folklore traditions of their country. Most of them are Greek and I am very proud to have met some of them in person.
You are in for a treat!
Avles
Avles is an amazing, new organisation created by two very talented young women Erini and Aristoula. They are focusing on the dissemination of Greek folk music, singing and dancing.
Keep an eye on them, I think they will do great things!
Coq Grec
Polymnia who is the creator behind Coq Grec is not only named after one of the ancient Greek muses, she is also exceptionally talented in cross stitching.
Her work is inspired by Greek folk embroidery, but she makes it so refreshingly modern and cool!
I have one of her pieces in my studio and as a reminder of how folk art can be reimagined!
Nisaki Mu
Korina, the artist behind Nisaki Mu, is an incredibly talented artist and ceramist who also happens to be my sister-in-law!
She has her own very personal drawing style that celebrates femininity, nature and beauty while using a lot of motifs found in Cretan folklore art.
A fun fact is that Korina handmade my wedding favors, which were little coffee mugs with motifs that were very special to my husband and I. My friends to this day send me pictures of their little mugs filled with their Greek coffee!
Lulu Ateliers
Lulu of Lulu Ateliers, is an amazingly talented Islamic arts artist. Her work is not only beautiful, but it has also helped me understand the influence Islamic art has had on Greek traditional art.
I have taken Lulu's classes and I love how she helps you understand the structure and proportions of Islamic motifs. I really hope that one day we can reach the same level of sophistication in teaching Greek folk art that Lulu has shown me.
A little disclaimer
Please know that I am not affiliated with any of the artists and I am only sharing their work because I genuinely love it!
If you like what they do, please consider supporting them.
